Fees & insurance

Every number, out in the open.

Therapy is an investment in yourself, and I believe in being upfront about what that investment looks like. These are my current rates. They're subject to change, but you'll always know ahead of time.

Session rates

Longer sessions cost more because they are longer — EMDR in particular often needs more room than a standard hour gives it.

If you're using insurance, what you actually pay depends on your plan's deductible, copay, and coinsurance. More on that below.

Initial therapy appointment · 60 minutes $225

Our first session gives us time to talk about what brought you to therapy, what you're dealing with now, relevant history, and what you want from our work together. We'll also start building a treatment plan that actually makes sense for you. And honestly? We can spend some of that hour just getting to know each other and making sure you feel comfortable. I'm not going to play 20 Questions, interrogate you about your entire life history, or expect you to jump straight into the hardest thing you've ever experienced. There's no pressure to tell me everything on day one. Trust takes time, and therapy should move at a pace that feels right for you. The first session is yours — we'll start where you are.

Individual therapy · 55 minutes $200

Ongoing individual therapy with adolescents and adults.

Individual therapy · 45 minutes $165

A shorter session option when clinically appropriate.

EMDR session · 75 minutes $250

Additional time for trauma-focused work or EMDR, when a standard session doesn't provide enough space for the work we're doing.

Extended EMDR session · 90 minutes $300
Family initial appointment · 60 minutes $250

For sessions involving multiple family members. An assessment is done ahead of time to make sure this is genuinely the right next step.

Family therapy · 55 minutes $225
Cancellations

Life happens — on both sides of the screen.

Late cancellation or no call / no show $125

Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. I keep a limited caseload so I can provide consistent, intentional care, and regular attendance helps us maintain momentum in the work we're doing together.

Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours' notice, as well as missed appointments, may be charged a $125 late cancellation / no-show fee. When an appointment is missed or canceled without enough notice, that time typically can't be offered to another client and can't be billed to insurance.

I also recognize that life happens — on both sides of the screen. There may be times when I need to cancel or reschedule due to illness, emergencies, or other unexpected circumstances. If that happens, I'll give you as much notice as I can and work with you to find another available time.

Emergencies and genuinely unexpected circumstances are always considered individually, because life can be wild. Thank you for offering me that same understanding when things get wild on my end too — I appreciate it.

Insurance coverage

In network with most of Wisconsin.

Phoenix Mental Health Services works with participating insurance plans and also welcomes clients who choose to pay privately.

Insurance can be confusing (because apparently it needs to be), so please reach out if you have questions about billing or something doesn't look right.

Before you start, call your plan

Your insurance company — not Phoenix Mental Health Services, LLC — ultimately determines your deductible, co-pay, coinsurance, covered services, and reimbursement. I recommend contacting them to confirm that Phoenix Mental Health Services, LLC and Rena Cross, MS, LPC are in network under your specific plan, and to ask about your outpatient mental health / behavioral health benefits.

Any co-pays, coinsurance, deductible amounts, or other client-responsible balances are automatically charged to the card on file following your session, unless we've set up an alternate billing arrangement in advance.

Don't want to use insurance?

That's completely okay too. The private-pay rates above are the standard rates. Paying privately means your insurance company isn't involved in determining medical necessity or receiving claims for your treatment.

Good Faith Estimates are available as required under federal law — here's what that means.

Questions about your coverage?

If you're unsure whether I take your specific plan, reach out before scheduling. We'll figure out what information you need to verify your benefits without making insurance any more complicated than it already is.

Additional professional services

Work outside the therapy room.

Sometimes clients need something beyond a regular appointment. When a request takes clinical review or professional time, these rates apply.

Fees are based on the actual professional time required and are generally not billable to health insurance.

Professional services & records requests $250/hour

This may include communication with outside professionals, reviewing information or records, completing requested forms or documentation, preparing individualized treatment summaries or letters, and other clinically related work requested by you or an authorized third party.

Copies of treatment records are provided in accordance with applicable Wisconsin and federal law, and any allowable fees follow current legal requirements. Preparing a customized summary, letter, or other document is a different thing from copying an existing record, and may be billed as professional time.

Still have a money question?

Ask before you schedule. I'd rather answer it now than have you find out something surprising on a statement later.

If you need help right now

Phoenix is a solo outpatient practice without 24-hour coverage, so I'm not the right call in an emergency. If you're in danger or thinking about harming yourself, please use one of these free, 24/7 options — they're staffed around the clock by people who want to talk to you.
